Profit On Winter Weather

Plumbers, snowplow drivers, and any businesses selling winter supplies are all trying to keep tabs on the forecast, especially where snow is concerned. Winter seems to be settling in early this year and that means lots of people need to stock up on the things they need to fight the frost. "A lot of people come in for rock salt...I'll have people lined up outside before I come in the morning," said Southern States Merchandising Coordinator Mechelle Scott. Freezing temperatures, heavy snowfall and ice have people trying to beat old man winter...and for companies trying to weather the bad economy, a bad snowstorm is good for business.

''We sell a lot of rock salt, it definitely ups our sales,'' said Scott.

Southern States is one retailer that carries a variety of winter gear for people to survive the elements but stores like these can't sell anything if their parking lot is covered in snow. ''This is profit-making snow, no headaches ... just put the plow down and get to work,'' said President of Pittman Lawn Care, David Pittman.

Lawn care companies like his don't just pack it up when there's no grass to cut — a change in the scenery just means using different equipment.

''You need a four-wheel drive truck with a plow, and a salt spreader,'' said Pittman.

Pittman's company plows parking lots for companies — almost 48 lots a day.

Although commercial clients come first, they do residential jobs as well helping elderly people clear their driveways.

''It's a very good day for us,'' said Pittman.

''Whatever people need for winter ... we have here,'' said Scott.
