GCS is a landscape design and construction firm that specializes in very large estates. The majority of their award winning landscape projects are located in Northern California, and range in size from four acres to eighty acres. Most estates are located in the natural beauty of a vineyard or an orchard. The overall value of the estates they work on range from five to twenty five million dollars.
The average investment by GCS?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? clients is typically 20 percent property, 40 percent residence and other structures and 40 percent landscaping. The projects typically last from two to four years. By doing the design work themselves they have the ability to give their clients the most creative, flexible and most efficient project for their investment. Typically starting with a blank canvas (bare piece of land), GCS then creates a well thought out and aesthetically pleasing design.
GCS has made the business decision that in order to control quality and performance on their projects they do not use sub-contractors. Every thing other than electrical work is performed by GCS crews. This includes grading, rock work, water features, masonry, concrete, welding, carpentry, irrigation, drainage and planting. They even manufacture a majority of the European style cast stone they use on their projects. GCS hires no one from the trades. Their crews are trained and promoted from within. They have made this decision in order to have control over quality and performance. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We invest a considerable amount of time and money to train our people. It is the most important investment we have ever made,?EUR??,,????'?????<? says Bill Goddard, president and founder. The business decision was also made to only deal directly with the client, no general contractor, project managers or architects stand between GCS and the client. This expedites their work, while giving the client pride in being involved with the creation of their estate. In order to further control quality and performance GCS will work on no more than two projects at a time.
While they received their California contractor?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s license over 24 years ago, GCS as it stands today was created six years ago. They started with one employee, a truck and a job site trailer. They now have 15 full time employees. In their original business plan they stated they intend to have no more than 24 of the finest quality and character driven employees. They are not interested in being the largest company in their industry however, they do strive to be the most efficient and creative in the industry.
The GCS equipment roster consists of 45 pieces, including trucks, tractors and trailers. For marketing reasons all of the equipment is painted in the company colors of victory red and space blue metallic. This includes their largest 44,000-pound Caterpillar excavator down to their wheelbarrows. The equipment roster includes the typical bulldozer, skip loaders, backhoes and skid steers. They also have a portable concrete batch plant that they move from estate to estate. This plant will produce as much as twenty cubic yards of concrete per hour and also feeds their custom gunite rig. GCS just finished guniting the biggest private pool built in Northern California in many years. The pool is six thousand square feet of surface area and required 10 tons of reinforcing steel, 95 tons of cement and 320 tons of sand to complete. All of this work was done by GCS crews.
To be on site every day with their management and design team, GCS moves a 30-foot office trailer onto the project. They have also designed and fabricated unique equipment for their own use including a wire caddie that attaches to tractors for the installation of irrigation control wire, a concrete forming supply trailer and a job site irrigation parts trailer. This custom engineered equipment really improves their performance and efficiency on the job site. As an example, the irrigation trailer is pulled around the estate to where the crews are working. Included on the trailer is the pipe, fittings and tools needed that day, thus no more waste of valuable time walking back and forth looking for fittings.

The founder of GCS, Bill Goddard spent over 20 years in sales and marketing before starting GCS. He was fortunate to have some of the most professional and talented people mentor him. One of the things that he was taught is that ?EUR??,,????'?????<?All business is not good business?EUR??,,????'?????<?. There are clients that are not right for GCS and vice versa. GCS has used this insight to help them pre-qualify their ideal client. Most of GCS?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s business comes via word of mouth, however they also have a very defined sales and marketing plan which includes brochures, networking, mailers, reprints of magazine articles about their projects, select trade shows and entries in a variety of high end design and construction awards. GCS has just designed and printed a 16 page brochure to showcase their work. This coupled with what they consider to be the most outstanding, talented and loyal crews in the landscape industry, has put them in the position to build the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?coolest?EUR??,,????'?????<? estates on the west coast. They have also made a conscience business decision to create true partnerships with only the best and most professional suppliers and to reward that partnership with prompt payment of invoices, loyalty and recognition of their involvement in GCS?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s success.
