Prof. Sorkin as a Finalist for Design Competition

The 2019 "Big Ideas for Small Lots NYC" competition, hosted by the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development and the American Institute of Architects New York, is dedicated to providing solutions to the city's affordable housing shortage and transforming vacant lots into developed residences.

Professor Michael Sorkin of The Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture and owner of Michael Sorkin Studio, was named a finalist for his project "Greenfill: House as Garden." Sorkin was one of five finalists chosen by a nine-member jury, and the proposals were evaluated based on design, replicability and construction feasibility. The City College of New York news release states that Sorkin's firm focused on urban design and green architecture, and proposed a terraced five-story, seven-unit accessible structure in Harlem, with improvements including sustainable materials, a new prototype for daylighting, and multi-purpose indoor and outdoor spaces.

Sorkin connects his project with the college's mission saying in the news release, "The school in general is about New York City, about design committed to social justice - and one of the main crises that the city faces at the moment is housing affordability."

The Center of Architecture will exhibit Sorkin's project and other findings from the "Big Ideas for Small Lots NYC" (https://calendar.aiany.org/2019/07/24/big-ideas-finalists-presentations/) competition through November 2, and finalists will showcase their projects at the same location on September 9.
