Preserving the 19th Century

BRENTSVILLE,Va.- Preservationists recently unveiled plans to restore the 19th-Century village of Brentsville, creating a historical and educational center. The village was the site of a Civil War rendezvous of South Carolina troops after the Battle of First Manassas in 1861.

The Friends of Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre has raised approximately $800,000 from federal and county grants, as well as private donations.

A jail and courthouse dating to 1822, a one-room schoolhouse built in 1928, and the Brentsville Union Church from 1874 will constitute the restored village, plus the site of a tavern destroyed during the Civil War. Nature trails and gardens are planned to enhance the historic site. In addition, a log cabin built in 1810 will be restored to its original location in the woods behind the village.
