Popular Tree Now Considered Invasive

The European bird cherry with its white flowers and red berries has been a popular planting choice in Anchorage.

The Anchorage Daily News reports the European bird cherry (Prunus padus, known as the May Day), a commonly transplanted tree in and around the city, is now considered invasive. The May Day seedlings are covering the greenbelts and forest floors, choking the growth of young native birch, willow, spruce, alder and cottonwood species.

The Alaska ASLA chapter has informed its members that the tree is no longer recommended.
