In Dec. 2006, we reported the international competition to revitalize Toronto?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s most prominent public space, Nathan Phillips Square, was down to four firms. On March 8, 2007, the competition jury announced the winner?EUR??,,????'?????<??oePlant Architect Inc. & Shore Tilbe Irwin of Toronto.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?In reaching our decision, we noted how the winning submission respects and restores the beauty and dignity of architect Viljo Revell?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s vision, while preserving and enhancing its unique heritage qualities,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Eric Haldenby, chairman of the jury.
The winning design includes two pavilions; a seasonal disappearing water fountain; a larger Peace Garden with a birch grove and reflecting pool; upper level roof terrace overlooking the square; a two-level restaurant; outdoor patio and terrace dining and elevator/stair access to the overhead walkway and adjacent public roof terrace; a landscaped roof for City Hall; upgrading the overhead walkways with wood decking, seating, glass balustrades, light wells and improved access; extending paving from the square; underground bicycle and car parking; a relocated and redesigned entry to the PATH system (underground walkway linking 16 miles of shopping, services and entertainment). Toronto has made a $16-million commitment to restore its public spaces and is seeking an additional $24 million.
