NEW YORK - In mid-July, the Lower Manhattan Development Corp. (LMDC) announced that six separate plans have been proposed for rebuilding the World Trade Center site. While specific details of the plans were not yet revealed at press time, each plan does include a memorial of some kind. Eleven million square feet of office and retail space was lost during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The redevelopment of this area has inspired much debate, and LMDC said that none of the plans are final blueprints yet. It is possible that elements from various plans will be intermingled to create the area?EUR??,,????'???s final design. According to the Associated Press, two of the plans would allow for commercial buildings to be erected on the site of the fallen trade towers, while the four other plans reserve this space for memorials only. John Whitehead, chairman of LMDC said that the company would host an international design competition to attract ideas for specific memorials. None of the six proposals call for buildings as tall as the 110-story towers. At press time, each of the plans were still in the ?EUR??,,????'??first draft?EUR??,,????'?? stage. LMDC and the Port Authority expect to narrow down the development plans to three by September, and determine a final plan by December of this year.
