The participants are now working to use the discussions to produce a report that looks to the state of the industry in 2020. It will likely be released in March, McCutcheon said.

The four-day meeting generated 87 pages of typed notes that are now being distilled into the report.

Jim McCutcheon of Georgia-based design-build firm HighGrove Partners chaired the 2006 Crystal Ball Committee, which is taking a long view, a decade and a half into the future.

Growth and Globalization

The landscape construction and maintenance industry will continue to grow over the next decade and a half, but it will also grow more competitive, McCutcheon said. The meeting chairman gave LCN readers a summary of some key meeting points.

Spanish-speaking labor from south of the border will not dominate the industry like it does today. Depending on political developments, and the worldwide security situation, more workers may come from other regions, like Asia and Africa.

Women are a potential source of landscape workers. ?EUR??,,????'?????<

Continued globalization will make the industry more competitive and will have an impact on manufacturers of outdoor power equipment (and other items) used by landscapers.
