The bus shelter's green roof vegetation of sedums and perennials were pre-grown in lightweight soil. An engineered fabric holds and distributes water; a root barrier protects the roofing from roots. The roof is water-resistant corrugated steel with a rigid mat atop it to help support the rest of the green roof layers. A plastic sheet above the rigid mat holds the majority of rainwater in the soil.
The Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) recently partnered with Roofmeadow to install a green roof on a bus shelter near Philadelphia City Hall at the intersection of 15th and Market. This green roof bus shelter demonstration project presages the city's plans for 20 more bus station green roofs this year. Green roofs for bus shelters is part of PWD's Green City, Clean Waters, a program to manage stormwater, primarily through green infrastructure, and Philadelphia Mayor Nutter's Greenworks Philadelphia, an initiative to improve the city's environment and reduce energy use. For the bus shelter project, PWD is partnering with the mayor's office of transportation and utilities, the mayor's office of sustainability, Titan, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and Roofmeadow. Roofmeadow generously donated its design time, plus installed and maintains this lightweight green roof. Huesker, GSE Lining Technology, SkyGarden and Sempergreen all donated materials for the green roof.
