The Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) has recognized 16 grounds management programs for excellence in the Society?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s 2008 Green Star Awards Competition. The 37th annual awards were presented during the Society?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s 2009 School of Grounds Management that took place October 28-31 held in conjunction with the GIE+EXPO in Louisville, Ky. This awards program brings national recognition to grounds maintained with a high degree of excellence. The Green Star Competition complements other national landscape award programs that recognize outstanding landscape design and construction.
This year?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s program acknowledged the nation?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s top grounds in settings ranging from public work sites to universities. Overall, PGMS presented nine Grand Awards, its highest honor, as well as seven Honor Awards and three Merit Awards in eight categories of competition.
Four of the total award winners were in the University and College Grounds category. Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., and Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, took home Grand Awards. Two others were recognized with Honor Awards in this category including Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich., and Kutztown University in Kutztown, Pa.
Four other award winners were in the Urban University Grounds category. The University of Texas at Brownsville took home a Grand Award. They were joined by the following Honor Award winners in this category: the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, California University of Pennsylvania and the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
PGMS presented two Grand Awards in the Government Building or Complex category. The Smithsonian National Zoological Park in Washington, D.C. and the Monona Terrace Convention Center in Germantown, Wis., received Grand Awards.
Two Honor Award winners were presented in the Hospital or Institution category. The Christ Hospital and Maple Knoll Village, both in Cincinnati, Ohio, took home Honor Awards.
PGMS recognized The Garden Continuum, Inc. with two Grand Awards. The first award was given in the Residential Landscape category for the landscape project the Brown Residence located in Concord, Mass., and the second award was given in the Industrial, Commercial Site, or Office Park category for the landscape project the Altus Center located in Providence, Rhode Island.
Two other Grand Awards were presented in two different categories. The Miami-Dade County Park & Recreation Department in Miami, Fla., took home a Grand Award in the Public Works Site category and the Breakers Palm Beach in Palm Beach, Fla., took home a Grand Award in the Hotel, Motel, or Resort category.
Merit Award winners included: Kohler Landscape in Kohler, Wis., in the Shopping Area category, St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington, La., in the Hospital or Institution category and Heritage Park in Surprise, Ariz., in the Park, Recreation Area, or Playground category.
Founded in 1911, PGMS is an individual membership society of grounds professionals dedicated to advancing the grounds management profession through education and professional development.
