A new toxic fumigant is expected to be approved by the Environmental Protection Agency for use by fruit and vegetable farmers, despite opposition from over 54 prominent scientists, physicians and environmental and farm worker groups. The scientists and doctors are urging the EPA to block the move for health-related reasons and to permit a panel of independent scientists to analyze EPA?EUR??,,????'???s safety analysis.
The pesticide, methyl iodide is manufactured by a Tokyo-based company and intended to substitute a different pesticide, methyl bromide that?EUR??,,????'???s being phased out by an international treaty, according to government officials. Whether it is indeed an improvement upon the latter is under question.
