Pesticide Recall

In a statement published on its Web site, Scotts blamed a single employee for attempting to circumvent federal registration and labeling requirements and said she has been fired. The company said that it is conducting an internal investigation and that it does not believe the products pose "any unreasonable risk to human health or the environment."

Four pesticide products from Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. have been recalled because the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said they are inaccurately labeled or circumvented federal toxic chemical regulations, according to the EPA’s region 5 office in Chicago. The agency ordered the recall, and the company and major retailers are cooperating.

If you have any of the following products, check the EPA registration number on the labels to see if they are among the recalled items. The registration numbers are crucial because the same products are sold under different names.

  • “Garden Weed Preventer + Plant Food” or “Miracle Gro Shake ‘n Feed All Purpose Plant Food Plus Weed Preventer” (EPA registration numbers 62355-4)
  • “SouthernMax” or “Scotts Bonus S Max Southern Weed & Feed and Fire Ant Killer” (registration numbers 538-301)
  • “Turf Builder Pre/Post 2” or “Scotts Turf Builder Max Plus 2 Weed & Feed and Crabgrass Preventer” (EPA registration numbers 538-299)
  • “SLS Fertilizer With .28 Halts,” “0-0-7 Plus .28% Halts Pro,” “22-0-8 Plus .28% Halts Pro” or “14-2-5 Plus .28% Halts Pro” (EPA registration numbers 538-304)

If you have an affected insecticide, don’t use it. Keep it in a cool, dry place out of reach of children and pets and call 888-295-0671 or see scotts.com for instructions.

The EPA said an investigation is under way into how the products were “unregistered, falsely and misleadingly labeled, or both.” Under federal law, toxic chemicals must be registered with the EPA before they can be sold in household products, which must be properly labeled.
