Most municipalities have an allotment of total impervious surfaces for new construction and renovation projects. This can be costly and quite cumbersome for developers, landscape architects and contractors. One way they are working to lessen the quantity of impervious surfaces is by utilizing Xeripave which has a runoff analysis of 0.00. An exotic car dealership in Wilsonville, Ore., needed to pave an outdoor showcase and drive-thru area at their new facility. Dennis Banks Construction installed 3,000 square feet of Xeribrix, a new product line that is used in light vehicular applications such as parking lot trench drains, driveways, aprons, and the like. The pavers were installed by hand and compacted with a machine. The installers reported that the major challenge on this job was making sure everything came out level. Preparation of the Base The sub-grade requirements are similar to pervious concrete/asphalt or permeable concrete pavers, that being clear, crushed aggregate base; keeping in mind that with such a large infiltration rate, the pavers will only be able to infiltrate what the base layers will allow. For vehicular uses, it is advised to install a geotextile fabric to preserve the load bearing capacity of the base over a greater length of time and to avoid migration of base material into the sub grade. The rock sub-base should be composed of a minimum of 6" of free draining ASTM No. 2 aggregates. The base is comprised of ASTM No. 57 aggregate at a minimal depth of 4'' followed by 1 1/2'' to 2'' of ASTM No. 8 aggregates. The bedding layer is spread, screeded and compacted to prevent shifting. After the pavers are placed they should be compacted using a vibrating rubber plate. Base preparation for the dealership took three men approximately one day.
The Keswick Golf Club in Keswick, Va., is on 600 acres of stunning countryside near Charlottesville. Legendary golf course architect Pete Dye designed a new golf course for the club and construction was completed in 2014. Porous Pave was selected to build the 6.9 miles of cart paths. With this poured-in-place, pervious solution, rainwater drains directly through the paved surface. This surfacing material is highly porous, durable and flexible. It consists of recycled rubber, aggregate and a binding agent. Every 1,000 square feet of two-inch surface uses rubber recycled from 300 tires. It is slip resistant, resilient and easy to install. Using a standard mortar mixer, mixing time is under a minute. It cures in just 24 hours. Preparation of the Base ''Porous Pave requires just a base course with one size of aggregate, not multiple layers with three different sizes,'' said Dave Ouwinga, president and chief executive officer, Porous Pave, Inc. ''In addition, the typical installation requires less excavation than other permeable alternatives.'' Dye Construction Group from Lansing, Mich., and IBN Construction from Newark, N.J., installed the new cart path atop undisturbed soil, already quite well compacted. This minimized necessary excavation. The installers used Bobcats to skim out a few inches of soil. The base is two inches of graded, crushed aggregate, low in fines, angular in shape, and ranging in size from 3/8'' to 3/4''. The installers selected a granite material for the aggregate because limestone or other softer stone is inappropriate for this product's base. Before installing the base, they inspected the aggregate to ensure it was substantially free of vegetative matter, shale and lumps of clay or dirt. They spread the aggregate out evenly, ensuring that the base extended 6'' beyond all sides of the 6'-wide area of installation. After the base was ready, the installers mixed the XL formulation in batches and poured it in place.
