An interdisciplinary team from Pennsylvania State University consisting of community members, landscape architects, geoscientists, environmentalists, philosophers and distinguished professors, was one of nine research groups to receive seed funding this year from the university.

The group is spearheading a project aimed at developing "community-based solutions to river flooding in the state of Pennsylvania," and is led by Lisa Iulo, associate professor of architecture and director of the Hamer Center for Community Design. Their project is named, "Penn State Initiative for Resilient Communities (PSIRC): A Pilot to Develop Community-Based Solutions to Riverine Flooding," and it closely aligns with the university's strategic plan of "Stewarding our Planet's Resources."

Reportedly, the project will include two phases. The first component will be working with the Borough of Selinsgrove to draft a plan for community resilience against flooding. The borough initially contacted the university in February of 2018 asking for assistance in addressing flooding and other socioeconomic challenges.

The second and final phase will be statewide implementation and working with stakeholders to ensure the findings are utilized properly.
