Another failed attempt to legalize thousands of palm trees in Cape Coral, Florida sent waves of anxiety, uncertainty and annoyance through city neighborhoods.
Unless the council changes its rules on tree planting, the city will have to uproot thousands of trees.
Mayor Eric Feichthaler, who leaves office in November, implored his colleagues on the council to change the city?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s restrictive landscaping ordinances. Many on the council sided with power company officials, who are resisting any trees that could grow to a height of more than 20 feet near power lines.
Hundreds of people looking at citations flooded the city council in early 2008 asking for more tree-friendly rules. They found an ally in Councilman Eric Grill and Feichthaler ?EUR??,,????'?????<??????????? who have tried to change the laws.
Councilman Bill Deile and Councilwoman Dolores Bertolini said they didn?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??t feel comfortable voting on the ordinance without it in front of them.
?EUR??,,????'?????<????????I think the sentiment expressed is that everybody is planning to find a solution,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? Deile said Tuesday.
City staff are holding off on enforcement of the tree ordinance until they get direction from the city council.
