Pacoima Pocket-Park Opens

The design of this pocket-sized park in Pacoima, Calif. packs in community-friendly features that include child play areas, fitness equipment, shaded picnic spots, community garden plots, a canopy stage area for entertainment and a learning garden of herbal plants. The park elements are sited around an oval lawn. The park designer is Jon Cicchetti, Landscape Architects of Long Beach, Calif.

The Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust www.lanlt.org celebrated the grand opening of Fox & Laurel Park in Pacoima, Calif. on Friday, May 17, 2013. Students from San Fernando High School joined the festivities. On hand were a mariachi band, folklorico dancers and community members.

The site of the new Fox and Laurel Park in Pacoima was an empty, unused space close to a bus stop. As it is an area children pass by every day on their way to and from school, it was a perfect location for a new park.

Tree plantings of crape myrtle, pink trumpet, live oak, citrus and elm shade the park.

The park opening is another step in fulfilling the Los Angeles 50 Park Initiative challenge, the city's goal of increasing park space in underserved communities.
