Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, recently received a $2.5 million grant to fund a research project aimed at creating monitoring systems for offshore wind turbines in an effort to curb impacts on wildlife. The grant is part of the $6.2 million in funding awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy to the school. The money is designated to aid in research revolving around projects that will reduce environmental compliance costs and impacts for land-based and offshore wind energy. A news release from the university reads as follows, "Oregon State University will design, build and test an autonomous monitoring system to accurately detect bird and bat collisions with offshore wind turbines.
