LASN has previously written about the Frederick Law Olmsted master planned community of Druid Hills, DeKalb County, Atlanta, Ga. Olmsted began planning this historic neighborhood in 1890, laying it out around a chain of linear parks. His plan was not realized until after his passing. Over the last decade, the Olmsted Linear Park Alliance has led a multimillion-dollar rehabilitation of the community?EUR??,,????'???s six parks.

There is one contentious issue in Druid Hills. There is a zoning change before the DeKalb County Commission to redevelop Emory Village?EUR??,,????'???s small business center vertically, allowing the one-story buildings, circa 1930, to elevate up to four-stories. The business center and surrounding neighborhood are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Some fear the modern, taller construction would dramatically alter the feel of the village, which is just a short walk from the Emory University campus.

The Alliance to Improve Emory Village, which includes university representatives, are pushing for the change, calling it a pragmatic way to attract more retailers.

If the county commission approves the upscale zoning, the 40-member Druid Hills Civic Association will likely appeal the decision.
