George Washington Vanderbilt III had his 250-room house, nay, castle, completed in 1895. The architect, Richard Morris Hunt, drew his inspiration from Loire Valley chateaux. A fellow by the name of Frederick Law Olmstead was the landscape architect. Olmsted designed the Rose Garden and Conservatory, the Italian Garden, the Walled Garden and the Azalea Garden., among other landscapes.
The public has toured the home since 1930, but 10 rooms on the fourth floor, where some of the servants were housed, have just been restored and are now open to the public for the first time since the 1950s.
The Biltmore Estate is owned by the descendants of George Vanderbilt, who operate it as a historic home and destination resort.
