The Buffalo, N.Y. media is anticipating what it calls ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????unprecedented access to Buffalo?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s waterfront,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? after 15 years and $6 million in studies produced a $55 million plan to transform the outer harbor into a 3.3 mile Olmsted-like parkway to replace Fuhrmann Boulevard, a maze of unsightly roadways obstructing lake access and shoreline development.
The Outer Harbor Greenbelt aspect of the project is a $14 million environmental restoration of 6,600 feet of Lake Erie shoreline that began in September 2006 and will be completed in the spring of 2008. This is basically a brownfield project to transform a former industrial area. It will include a scenic recreational 13-ft. wide paved path, green space, waterfront access for the community, a new shoreline stone revetment, site landscaping with native plants to attract wildlife, and even construction of a shallow-water fish habitat along the shoreline.
Funding for this project is primarily through the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Environmental Restoration Program under the New York State 1996 Clean Water/Clean Air Bond Act. The ERP provides financial assistance to local governments for cleanup and restoration of brownfield sites.
