Olin Partnership, a Pennsylvania-based landscape architecture firm with studios in Philadelphia and Los Angeles, has been selected to lead a multiyear redesign and renovation of the Metropolitan Museum of Art?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s plaza on Fifth Avenue in New York City.
The project comes as a result of the need to replace the museum’s two fountains, which have been turned off for several years. According to museum director Thomas P. Campbell, this led to a broader discussion of the plaza’s layout.
“We are proud to launch this monumental project, and delighted to collaborate with such a distinguished and creative design team as OLIN,” Campbell said. “The Met’s Beaux-Arts façade is one of the great architectural treasures in America, and this initiative represents an important opportunity to create a truly dynamic space around this remarkable building. The steps of the Met have long been a beloved part of our visitors’ experience here, and we look forward to extending the vitality of that iconic area to the surrounding plaza. Indeed, this exciting new outdoor environment will provide the perfect complement to the majestic spaces and exceptional collections found within the building.”
Apart from the steps, he said, the rest of the space, including the fountains, would be completely rethought. The Met expects to complete the renovation by 2015.
