Oldcastle's Anchor Concrete Products division has licensed green concrete technology for their New Jersey manufacturing center from Halifax-based firm CarbonCure. The firm's system injects waste carbon dioxide into concrete to make it stronger and more sustainable.

Building products manufacturer Oldcastle APG agreed to license the sustainable retrofit for Anchor after a similar agreement was reached five months ago with Northfield Block, another Oldcastle division and a leading masonry producer in the Midwestern U.S.

Anchor will initially install CarbonCure technology in their New Jersey plant, with an option to manufacture the product in the greater Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City, Hartford, Providence and Boston markets.

"We've developed a technology that allows existing manufacturers to retrofit their plants to make green concrete," CarbonCure's Jennifer Wagner told The Chronicle Herald in an interview the 2013 Greenbuild International Expo in Philadelphia.

CarbonCure's retrofit technology is bolted onto a manufacturer's existing production line. The manufacturer pays a royalty fee for every unit of concrete produced using the technology.

"There is a wave of transformation happening in the building sector now where large design firms and corporates like Google are asking for information on the health and environmental impacts of the products they use," Wagner said.

"We are excited about the opportunity to partner with CarbonCure and utilize this technology, which positions our company to respond to the rapidly growing demand for greener building materials," Matt Lynch, Oldcastle APG's chief operating officer for the northeast region, said in a news release.
