Ohio City Hall Plans Permeable Parking Project

South Euclid, Ohio, is planning to renovate the parking lot and exterior of its city hall with permeable pavers and native landscaping to filter stormwater, funded with a grant from the state's Environmental Protection Agency.

The Ohio EPA awarded a $166,000 grant to the Cleveland suburb of South Euclid to fund repaving their city hall parking lot with permeable pavers, rather than traditional asphalt.

In the newly constituted parking lot, water will seep into the pavers and collect in an underdrain beneath the lot. The system will prevent pollutants from contaminating local groundwater.

The renovation, scheduled to begin in the spring, also includes removing landscaping and ''all unnecessary concrete in front of the building,'' according to South Euclid Economic Development Director Michael Love. Native landscape plantings will be installed as an additional filter for stormwater.
