Bradford Pear trees are becoming a popular feature for landscaping aesthetics in the Ozarks, but the trees may be doing more harm than good.
In Springfield, Mo., it?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s hard to miss the Bradford Pear trees in yards and lining streets, their white flowers lighting up the landscape. Experts say the trees are popular because they grow fast- up to two feet a year. In recent decades they've become one of the most popular landscaping trees in the Ozarks.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?A lot of people want instant gratification and this is a good way to get it," explained Becky Nicholas of Wickman?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Garden Village.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
The problem is that the Bradford Pear species doesn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t always stay where it's planted.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?They were not supposed to produce a fruit, a seed, and they did. And so that accelerated their ability to spread,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Cindy Garner with the Missouri Department of Conservation. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?It could possibly do that (invade) and take over because it is so easy for it to germinate.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
The trees are cropping up in cities and the wild. They may choke-off and block shade for native vegetation. They?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re also proving to be a big mess.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?They grow real fast which means they break real fast. Our ice storms and snow can cause them to do this,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Nicholas said.
The Missouri Department of Conservation is urging residents to nip the thing in the bud, literally, by keeping trees pruned. People are also urged to consider planting fewer new Bradford Pears.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?Another option is that is that if you see them on your property, you could choose to cut. And then you need to treat the stump so they won?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t re-sprout,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Garner explained. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?It?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s a high-maintenance tree. They are going to have to take the time and money if they want it to last a long time.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
