NEW YORK - Cindy Rosin, A protester with the Activism Center at Wetlands and Rainforest Relief (ACWRR), was recently arrested for climbing a 30-foot pole in front of the Department of Transportation headquarters to fly a banner reading "Caution: DOT Destroys Rainforests."

Demonstrators were protesting the use of rainforest wood throughout New York City. They claim the DOT was singled out because it has been unresponsive to environmental issues and has used Guyanese rainforest wood for the Brooklyn Bridge, docks and other city sites.

The "Good Wood" Bill #784, currently under review by the New York City Council, would ban usage of most rainforest hardwood in NYC if it passes. The bill suggests the use of recycled plastic lumber as an environmenally-friendly alternative for construction.

Since Mayor Rudolph Guiliani has stated he will veto the bill, the Council will need a two-thirds majority to pass it.

Other agencies being targeted by ACWRR include the Metropolitan Authority, the Department of Parks and Recreation and the NY Transit Authority.
