Parks and Recreation Activities Leading to Community Connection
by Staff

Events like the local Farmer's Market bringing communities and families together.

The National Recreation and Park Association conducted a poll that found that parents whose children are active participants in communal activities feel more connected to their community. The poll found that 96% of parents agree that attendance at these events leads to a greater local affinity.

Kevin Roth, Vice President of NRPA emphasized the importance of these events "Whether an annual parade, weekly farmers market visit or daily walk, parks and recreation provides opportunities for members of the local community come to together and connect with one another."

These connections were experienced more by millennials than adults at a differential of about 20%. The NRPA expressed optimism that more parents and children will continue to participate in events to feel further tied to and a part of their communities. These events are catalysts for creating meaningful local connections.
