The president and CEO of the National Recreation and Park Association Barbara Tulipane released a statement on Monday Dec. 11 requesting President Donald Trump to reconsider his plan to reduce the size of two national monuments in Utah.

On Dec. 4, President Trump signed a proclamation that would modify the boundaries of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments. The changes are scheduled to go into affect 60 days from Dec. 4.

"Reducing our treasured lands threatens our nation's health and economic well-being. Our nation's public lands, therefore, must remain public so that they can be enjoyed by all Americans as they were intended," Tulipane said.

Trump's plan will reduce the federal government's control of the national monuments and open the land up for public use.


"Public lands will once again be for public use because we know that people who are free to use their land and enjoy their land are the people most determined to conserve their land," said Trump at the Utah State Capitol.

According to Tulipane's statement, the contributions of the two national monuments to the outdoor recreation industry "generate $887 billion of economic activity and support over seven million jobs."
