NRPA Pushes for Park Access

Association to Host Webinar and Network Calls

The 10 Minute Walk Campaign is working towards having parks safely and easily accessible to cities across the United States.

The fair and just implementation and availability of parks is an issue that NRPA is working towards through advocating for policy change and educating political leaders and citizens on park access. NRPA defines the term "Park Access" as, "The just and fair quantity, proximity and connections to quality parks and green space, recreation facilities, as well as programs that are safe, inclusive, culturally relevant and welcoming to everyone. When people have just and fair access, our health and social wellbeing improve, and our communities can protect and better recover from environmental, social, and economic challenges." The association has communicated that their goal with park access is to create a change in the planning, funding, and support for communities throughout the country.

NRPA is taking specific actions to provide education on these issues through webinars and network calls. The network calls are a way to open up conversation and dialogue about park accessibility in an informal and open way. The first network call is scheduled for June 18, and the second is set for August 20. They also have a webinar scheduled for July 16, which will include 17 professional speakers with diverse backgrounds in the industry.

Furthermore, NRPA is putting together a movement called 10 Minute Walk, which calls for individuals to "Make the 100% promise to ensure that everyone in your city has safe, easy access to a quality park within a 10-minute walk of home by 2050." Rachel Banner, director of Park Access and leader of the 10 Minute Walk Campaign, will be among the speakers of the July webinar.
