NRPA Poll Shows Parks and Recreation Provide Workout Opportunities in the Winter

Inclement Weather is a Challenge

NRPA study shows that a significant percentage of adults seek out parks and recreation departments during inclement weather for more affordable exercise options.

According to the latest National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Park Pulse poll, 84 percent of U.S. adults depend on local parks and recreation departments during inclement weather that is common in the winter.

"For many people, physical activity and mental health go hand in hand, so staying active through the winter is important," said Kevin Roth, NRPA vice president of research, evaluation, and technology. "Parks and recreation provide many opportunities to keep moving during less-than-ideal weather days."

Top indoor activities according to the study include, running, walking, strength training, yoga, and swimming which oftentimes are offered at cheaper rates through local park and recreation agencies.
