Sunday, August 25th marked 108 years of operation for the National Park Service (NPS). All week, national parks around the country will host special events and tours, all geared toward sharing the best of the country with its citizens. Founded in 1916, the NPS was created to "preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations." Since that time, the park system has grown to over 400 national parks, with its newest addition - the Springfield 1908 Race Riot National Monument - being established just a couple of weeks ago, on August 16th.
