The National Park Service (NPS) recently announced the distribution of $85.15 million in grant funding to support the preservation of historic sites across the United States. The funding is broken into two areas with $23 million going towards Tribal Historic Preservation Offices (THPO) and $62.15 million to states, territories, and partnering nations. The funds, provided through the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF), are distributed to support the preservation of historic buildings, sites, and cultural resources.

"These grants will help communities preserve their unique history and heritage, and provide opportunities for their residents and visitors to learn from and enjoy these special places," said NPS Deputy Director Shawn Benge.

 

The grant funding will be used for a variety of preservation projects, including the restoration of historic buildings, the rehabilitation of cultural landscapes, and the development of interpretive materials and educational programs. The funds will also support the development of new preservation plans and the establishment of historic preservation commissions.

"These grants provide critical support to communities across the country as they work to preserve their historic resources," said Benge. "By investing in our past, we are investing in our future and ensuring that these important places will continue to inspire and educate for generations to come."

The HPF, established in 1977, is a federal program that supports the preservation of historic sites and cultural resources through grant funding and technical assistance. The program is funded through revenue generated by the federal government's Outer Continental Shelf oil and gas leasing program.
