Northern CA News NCC/ASLA Activities BERKELEY, CA The Northern California Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (NCC/ASLA) recently honored local design firms for their achievement in design, restoration and preservation, planning and research. Awards were presented at the chapter's Annual Meeting in San Jose, CA. This year, the biannual design competition honored "success stories, innovative techniques, streamlined processes, new developments and other inspiring ideas using today's technologies to influence the way we work and design." This year's recipients of Certificates of Merit included MPA Design of San Francisco for exceptional achievement in design and Wolfe Mason Associates of Berkeley for restoration and preservation. Recipients of Certificates of Honor included Royston, Hanomoto, Alley and Abey of Mill Valley for restoration and preservation and Kim Vogley Associates of Brentwood for planning and research. In addition, outgoing NCC/ASLA President David Mitchell represented the chapter on the Chapter President Council (CPC) of the ASLA. The CPC consists of all 47 chapter presidents and meets twice a year. The underlying concern of this group is "overcoming membership apathy in promoting, enhancing and running ASLA at the local levels." According to Mitchell, "The chapters that seem to be the strongest are in states where continuing education is a requirement to maintain a professional license or where a deregulation fight is occurring. Our chapter is not out of step with the rest of the society; however the executive board does recognize that we need to provide more membership programs." LASN extends best wishes to incoming NCC/ASLA President Glenn Rock.
