Who knew that bollards were so newsworthy? You might recall ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Retractable Bollards Also Rise?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? from the Sept. 2007 issue in which retractable bollards in central Manchester, England allow buses with sensors to enter, but not cars. Some cars try to tailgate the buses to get through before the bollards rise?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????a tactic that doesn?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t work and has resulted in numerous cars banging into the rising bollards in accordion fashion and entertaining millions of viewers on youtube.
Now, in Gansevoort Plaza, the cobblestone intersection in the heart of New York City?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s Meatpacking District, a variety of bollards, blocks and planters have been placed in a triangular formation in the middle of the street by the NY D.O.T. on Ninth Ave. between Little West 12th and West 13th Street, as a temporary measure to reclaim space from cars and create a ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????plaza?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? from what a Chelsea newspaper likened to a ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????car-and-pedestrian free-for-all.?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? The bollard area increases pedestrian safety and the D.O.T. is committed to making it a permanent plaza and maintaining the space.
This project is part of the NYC Streets Renaissance campaign and spearheaded by the Greater Gansevoort Urban Improvement Project, with help from the Project for Public Spaces.
Some have objected to the plaza?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s haphazard look and the nipple-topped bollards.
Part of the design challenge for the plaza is the area?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s historic-district designation. The curbs, for instance, can?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t be moved, although they perhaps could be extended. Such design changes would require involving the Landmarks Preservation Commission and the Art Commission.
