Nineteen01 Luxury Apartment Landscape

Lifescapes International, a landscape architecture firm based in Newport Beach, Calif., designed the landscape for Nineteen01, a four-story, 264-unit, luxury apartment community in Santa Ana, Calif. The courtyard includes a central fountain, four cozy, plush seating nooks with rectangular fire tables, along with three less formal seating areas in-the-round. The courtyard sports Brisbane Box, fern pine, Himalayan Champaca evergreens and King palms.

Lifescapes International, an internationally recognized landscape architecture firm, completed the landscape design for Nineteen01, a four-story, 264-unit, luxury apartment community in Santa Ana, Calif. The apartment community was developed by Lyon Living, a Newport Beach-based commercial real estate investment and development firm that specializes in multifamily communities.

Lifescapes began designing the landscape in the fall of 2013, construction of the apartment complex started in late 2014, and the facility opened in August 2016.

"Nineteen01 reimagines and redefines what apartment living means in Orange County," says Julie Brinkerhoff-Jacobs, president of the landscape architecture firm. "Our vision was to create a resort-style flair that combined intimate and dynamic spaces that would deliver a true live-work-play environment that residents are demanding."

The apartment complex boasts a resort-style pool and spa, recreation deck and private poolside cabanas.

The apartment complex is an ultra-plush, ultra-modern facility, complete with a resort-style pool and spa, recreation deck, private cabanas, a central courtyard, outdoor seating areas and gardens. It also has a luxurious clubhouse with high-speed Wi-Fi, large flat screen TVs, an indoor/outdoor fireplace, lounge seating with convertible communal spaces, and a gourmet demonstration kitchen, among many other amenities.

The landscape design firm wanted to create numerous intimate comfortable spaces that are lavishly "people focused," while remaining sensitive and respectful to the owner's concerns about the budget, maintenance and long-term durability.

"Palazzo' pavers (Acker-Stone) in subtle shades and varying sizes (6" x 6", 1' x 2' and 2' x 2') create an eye pleasing courtyard hardscape, bordered by artificial turf and interspersed with "Cardiff' and "Prism' pottery (Old Town Fiberglass).

"Today's younger millennial generation is seeking environments that are more than just a place to live, which is exactly what we were able to deliver with the landscape of this project," the head of the landscape architecture firm said. "We infused the design with youthful energy creating numerous intimate gathering spaces surrounded by lush, tropical trees to create a destination-like look and feel to the community. This overall design instantly makes residents feel like they've been transported to a destination resort."

"Plants were grouped together based on water needs and efficiencies in order to maximize water savings," explained Julie Brinkerhoff-Jacobs, president of Lifescapes International. More than 70 plants decorate the complex. The dominant shrubs are Asian Jasmine, Carpet geranium, Golden Variegated sweet flags and Green Carpet natal plums.

The landscape architecture firm has spearheaded many iconic landscapes that are recognized as trendsetters in the industry, including mixed-use developments, resorts and hotels, casinos, residential communities and retail/lifestyle centers. Some of its notable projects include the Fillmore Center in San Francisco; The Marke apartment community in Santa Ana (another Lyon Living destination community); Trumark Urban's TEN50 downtown Los Angeles project; Wynn Las Vegas; Red Rock Resort Spa & Casino; The Americana at Brand in Glendale; Fontainebleau Miami Beach; the West Zhujiajian mixed use residential/resort project in China; the Four Seasons Macau; among many others.

The "Las Olas" ("waves' in Spanish) sculpture in front of the complex is stainless steel. Matt Devine is the artist, and Betsy Lane was the artist consultant.
