A balmy, summer evening in 1897 sets the stage for this terrace garden on the Euclid Avenue estate of Cleveland's Charles F. Brush, inventor of the electric arc street lamp. A sandstone staircase and a moonlit arbor welcome guests into the "sights, scents and sounds" of this nighttime experience of "Cleveland's Timescape." (See LASN's "Beautiful Ohio" commemorative issue, September 1995)
Theatrical "mood lighting" and unusual plant forms give this garden cheerful life under the glow of moonlight. An arrangement of forest honey locusts, river birch, rhododendrons, daffodils, tulips and evergreens complement the natural stone walls and steps. White pines are stunningly dramatic against the blackened walls of the enclosed garden.
This trellis garden, completely enveloped in "nighttime"-- black gridwork and landscape felt-- offers guests a time travelling view, over the tops of trees and across the once undeveloped valley, that examines the changing skyline from Brush's time to present-day time. In contrast to a static, backlit skyline, slide-projected images of various views 1800's-present recognize the indomitable spirit of two centuries of civilization along the shores of the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie.
The Pattie Group's Vice President Bill Fehrenbach describes the fadeaway slide program as "not all-inclusive... we selectively chose the best possible views to portray the history of Cleveland."
