New Standards for Tennis Courts

Surfaces to be tested

The International Tennis Foundation is establishing a world-wide network of independent laboratories to undertake the testing of tennis court surfaces for competition play. The ITF has appointed the International Association for Sports Surface Sciences to coordinate and administer the accreditation of the scheme on its behalf.

Three categories of tennis court surfaces will be established including: Category 1 for slow play (clay, unbound materials), Category 2 for medium play (hard courts such as acrylic surfaces) and Category 3 for fast play (grass, artificial turf, textiles, etc.)

The new surface standards could have a significant impact on those who normally install tennis courts at athletic facilities. The attempt to quantify the speed of tennis balls has caused companies like Nova Sports to develop a new acrylic surface that can be pre-mixed to achieve the desired speed. The Nova Combination Surface has already been used at professional tournaments including the Davis Cup Championships.
