The New Milford, Conn. Zoning Commission is creating new Village District Overlay regulations for the greater downtown area. New Milford has the traditional New England village green and has renovated the downtown by burying utilities, replacing old sidewalks, installing period lighting, replacing trees, and repaving streets.

The new regulations will apply to the downtown but also the north and south zones from the village center. Recently adopted state legislation allows for establishing architectural and streetscape standards for ?EUR??,,????'??historically significant neighborhoods?EUR??,,????'?? and extending the protected village center zone.

The proposed regulations are modeled on those of Madison and Brooklyn, Conn. and include authority for the design and placement of buildings; maintenance of public views; design, paving materials and placement of public roadways; plantings; signs; and other elements to protect the character of the district.
