Martyn Timmings, presided over the annual IESNA conference held in Washington in August after his election to President for 2000-2001. Timmings is the fifth Canadian to be elected to his position since the Society was founded in 1906.

He has been actively involved with IESNA since 1977, starting out with the local section in Toronto as program chair and becoming its President in 1982. He served the Canadian region of IESNA in various capacities including the Lighting Design Awards program and as the Regional Vice President from 1990 to 1993. On the international level he served as a Director and as Vice President of Design and Application. He also participated in and chaired various IES committees, and has given more than 50 technical papers and presentations at IES conferences throughout Canada.
