Calif. Assemblyman Mike Davis (D-Los Angeles] plans to formally introduce a resolution to the legislature to ?EUR??,,????'?????<?order?EUR??,,????'?????<? state parks officials to explore the possibility of converting Michael Jackson?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s former Neverland Ranch in Santa Barbara, County into a state park. Assemblyman Mike Davis chairs the committee on arts, entertainment, sports, tourism, and internet media.
Neverland Ranch became the property of the private-equity firm Colony Capitol of Santa Monica in 2008, when Jackson was facing foreclosure. At that time, the ranch was part amusement park, part zoo and part library. The 2,600-acre property offered such diversions as a working locomotive, amusement rides, including a Ferris wheel, a zoo and a 10,000-volume library.
Alice Huffman, president of the California NAACP, who also serves on the state parks commission, supports the initiative for two reasons: one, that Neverland could join Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park as a state park honoring African Americans; two, that Neverland could become a popular tourist destination like nearby Hearst Castle, or perhaps along the lines of Elvis?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? Graceland in Memphis, Tenn. Graceland generated $36 million in revenue in 2009, while Hearst Castle is more of a break even proposition.
Bloomberg News reported in June that Colony Capitol President Thomas Barrack Jr. would like to sell Neverland for more than $100 million.
State parks spokesman Roy Stearns told the Sacrament Bee the parks department has not participated in any discussions about acquiring Neverland, nor is it interested now in acquiring such an expensive property.
California State Parks (CSP) has 278 ?EUR??,,????'?????<?units?EUR??,,????'?????<? (properties) and an annual budget of $464 million. Over 1.3 million acres of land are owned or managed by CSP, which represents nearly 1.5 percent of the state?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s total area.
