What a busy year for the ASLA's Nevada Chapter! Once again, volunteer participation was excellent leading to the success of this chapter. The focus this year has been on educating members through monthly luncheons, plus educating the public and officials about landscape architecture, while increasing media attention on the profession. The topics for the member education speakers included social media, pathways to play, CPTED (crime prevention through environmental design), horticulture and aging, and tours of the freeway extension in northern Nevada and the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension in Las Vegas. We were also very fortunate to have Susan Hatchell give an energizing talk to both the Las Vegas and Northern Nevada groups.

National Landscape Architecture Month (NLAM) was a great success with our ever-popular "30 Days of Landscape Architecture" in which members share their photos and quotes each day of the month. Other NLAM events included chalking a Complete Street at Cox Elementary, the Safe Routes to School event at Caughlin Ranch Elementary, celebrating Olmsted's birthday with cupcakes and cake, handing out Landscape Architecture magazines to highly visited local businesses, placing "Designed by a Landscape Architect" signs at projects, helping Boy Scouts get their Landscape Architect Badge, and even receiving a proclamation for our state governor, Brian Sandoval, declaring April as Landscape Architecture Month! We celebrated our 21th annual golf tournament with wonderful weather and some great competition. We also had booths at the Southern Nevada Trails Day and the Springs Preserve annual plant sale. Our Parking Day was spectacular. It included surveying the downtown community for input on their needs and wants for green space.

Nevada ASLA Chapter member Kathy Wilson promotes the profession during Landscape Architecture Month (April).

We participated in the Desert Green Conference and presented the 2012 Award of Appreciation award to Joe Fortier. This award goes to a person outside the landscape architecture. Joe has supported the chapter for many years by mentoring students in irrigation and water conservation, as well as promoting the profession.

Nevada ASLA Chapter member Jim Chaddick teaches a class at the Springs Preserve plant sale.

Several firms in our chapter's northern section were mentors for a local high school student. She interned for three landscape architecture firm to experience all aspects of the profession. She is attending college to earn her degree in landscape architecture.Throughout the year we have been actively promoting the profession and building collaborations. We have tracked changes to our Regional Transportation Plan and our local Complete Street Study, as well as provided input on state changes to the Nevada Administration Code that effect our profession. We are building a partnership with the Nevada Advocacy Advance and "gone international" by meeting with the Belgium Trade Commissioners and the Belgium Design Mission members.

The chapter gave Nate Gould, an account manager for Hunter Industries in Phoenix, and Susan Hatchell, past president of ASLA, certificates of appreciation during the ASLA Expo/meeting in Phoenix.

Our fifth Art Auction event and end-of-year Pink Flamingo Reception and Landscape Architecture Awards are coming up soon and will round out the 2012 calendar year with fun and a bit of showing off of our artistic and design talents.
