Rising reports of fire ants in the North Carolina counties of Orange and Durham caused the Orange County Cooperative Extension to hold a meeting in October with information on how to combat the pest.
Extension officials have reported received more than 25 calls in September and October about fire ants found in pastures, hay fields and lawns. One farmer indicated finding more than 200 fire ant mounds in a hay field in the northern part of Durham. Previously fire ants were confined to southern regions of North Carolina, but they have moved northward since last year.
At the meeting, entitled ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????Identification and Control of Fire Ants on Farms and in Landscapes?EUR??,,????'?????<????????, Dr. Steve Bambara, Extension entomologist at N.C. State University, discussed the effectiveness of various methods of treatment.
