There?EUR??,,????'???s more to turfgrass research than just watching the grass grow, and the newly formed NTF will handle soliciting research funds, generating resources, gaining federal funding and education initiatives, just for starters.

A new organization is being formed, to be called the National Turfgrass Federation Inc. Sept. 27, 2006, the National Turfgrass Federation (NTF) board of directors held its inaugural meeting in Washington, D.C. Organizations represented at this historic meeting included:

  • United States Golf Association Green Section (Michael Kenna, Ph.D.)
  • Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (Clark Throssell, Ph.D.)
  • Turfgrass Producers International (Kirk Hunter)
  • Professional Landcare Network (Tom Delaney)
  • Crop Science Society of America, Turfgrass Science Division (Brian Horgan, Ph.D.)
  • National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (Kevin Morris)

The newly formed National Turfgrass Federation is seeking 501© 6 non-profit status from IRS.

The mission of NTF is to identify and aid in generating resources and implementation of research through the National Turfgrass Research Initiative. NTRI is an industry-sponsored initiative to gain federal funding for turfgrass research.

The goal of NTF is to secure funding for turfgrass research within the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service meeting with White House, USDA and congressional staff; consulting with USDA, ARS officials on use of appropriated research funds and implementation of NTRI goals; and soliciting funds from associations, companies and individuals for expenses.

Another function of NTF is to educate congressional staff and administration officials, all the way to the secretary of agriculture, on the value and scope of the turfgrass industry and turfgrass’ importance to Americans.

Sept. 26-27, the NTF Board of Directors and others met with Congressional staff, USDA officials and Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns to discuss the size and scope of the turf industry, the value of turfgrass to the nation’s economy, critical needs including research on reducing water use and other inputs, improved turfgrass germplasm and better athletic turf systems.
