National Park Service Seeks Public Feedback on E-Bike Use in National Parks

NPS Opens Comment Period Through July 21
by Staff

The National Park Service has announced an open comment period, allowing the public and various agencies to provide feedback on the programmatic environmental assessment (PEA) for e-bike use in national parks.

The National Park Service (NPS) has initiated an open comment period for individuals, local communities, State, Tribal, and Federal agencies to offer their feedback on a programmatic environmental assessment (PEA) that explores the potential impacts of electric bicycle (e-bike) use in national parks. The comment period will be open from June 21 to July 21, 2023.

E-bikes have the potential to provide several benefits to parks and visitors, including facilitating easier travel, expanding access for individuals with physical limitations, and offering opportunities for healthy recreation. However, the NPS must ensure that the management of this emerging form of access and recreation aligns with the protection of park resources, values, and visitor experiences. The PEA assesses the potential impacts of e-bike use at a national scale, considering natural and cultural resources, visitor use and experience, and wildlife.

Under current NPS regulations, park superintendents can allow e-bikes on roads and trails where traditional bicycles are permitted. However, designated "wilderness areas" that have been designated by Congress will remain off-limits to both traditional bicycles and e-bikes. The PEA is being conducted in accordance with court direction to complete an analysis consistent with the National Environmental Policy Act.

To provide feedback on the programmatic environmental assessment, individuals can do so in the following ways:
1. Online: Visit https://parkplanning.nps.gov/e-bikes to submit comments.
2. Mail or Hand Delivery: Send comments to Electric Bicycle Programmatic EA, National Park Service, 1849 C Street NW, MS-2472 Washington, DC 20240.

The NPS encourages interested individuals to participate in the comment period and share their perspectives on e-bike use in national parks.
