The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) sent a letter to the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary on June 4. The letter emphasizes the role that HUD plays in rental assistance and construction programs for low-to-moderate-income Americans.

 

The letter is further in response to President Trump's $33 billion proposed funding cut for the 2026-fiscal year. Congress has not approved the budget yet.

"NAHB strongly opposes the $26.7 billion cut and block granting of HUD's rental assistance programs - which include PBRA, the HCV program, and other housing program funds for the public, elderly and disabled," the letter stated. "Likewise, NAHB strongly opposes defunding the HOME and Community Development Block Grant programs. These critical HUD programs are absolutely necessary to expand the supply and availability of affordable housing."

NAHB believes that if these cuts are made, they will have a harsh impact on new construction of affordable units, preservation of units, and low-income renters. The association believes that the administration needs to reconsider the proposal. HUD Secretary Scott Turner was questioned at a congressional hearing over the proposed cuts and faced tough reactions according to the Washington Examiner.
