NAHB Analyzes AI's Impact on Residential Construction

Hands-On Jobs Less Exposed

New NAHB analysis finds most construction occupations have relatively low exposure to AI, with greater effects expected in planning and administrative work.

Artificial intelligence has yet to make a major impact on many hands-on residential construction jobs, according to an analysis highlighted by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that 45 of 47 construction-related occupations have low or moderate relative exposure to artificial intelligence.

The remaining two occupations, construction managers and construction and building inspectors, are classified as having high exposure. By contrast, carpenters, construction laborers, roofers and operating engineers are among the occupations with relatively low AI exposure. Their work depends on physical execution, specialized equipment, materials and site-specific safety considerations that are difficult to automate fully.

The analysis also aligns with findings from NAHB's Housing Market Index, which indicate that builders primarily use AI for information-intensive tasks such as advertising, marketing, project planning and design.

Employment projections also point to continued demand for skilled construction professionals. Construction managers and building inspectors are projected to experience employment growth of 9% over the coming decade, while solar photovoltaic installers, classified as having moderate AI exposure, are projected to grow 37%.
