Mt. Vernon, Ind., Receives $6 million IDOT Grant for Bicycle Path/Decorative Street Lighting

The proposed bike/pedestrian trail for Mount Vernon, Indiana, will go from the Ohio River frontage through Main Street in the downtown. This building is the "Old" National Bank on Main Street. It was built in 1990 on the site of the former I.O.O.F. and Barker buildings, which were erected at the end
of the nineteenth century.

The Evansville Courier & Press of Indiana reports the city of Mount Vernon (pop. 6,687), situated in the far southwest corner of the state and part of the Evansville metro area (pop. 358,676), will use a $6 million state grant to fund a bicycle and pedestrian trail that will run from the Ohio River frontage, through the downtown and end west of newly renovated Brittlebank Park.

Mount Vernon Mayor John Tucker said the grant will also be used to create a pocket park, and develop the 200 and 300 blocks of Main Street with antique, decorative street lighting.

The grant is from the Indiana DOT. It's a matching grant, so the city will have to ante $1.2 million before the state will award the first round of funding, scheduled for the summer of 2016. The mayor hopes local businesses will be motivated by the grant to donate to the project, which he estimates will cost around $6.8 million.
