Award-winning lighting design and theatrical consulting firm Visual Terrain, Inc., had just completed lighting the Morongo Casino Resort and Spa in Cabazon, CA, near Palm Springs. They worked closely with The Jerde Partnership, architects, to complete the project. The exteriors required some special considerations.
?EUR??,,????'?????<? It?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s this concept that the building is breathing light. We?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re just not throwing light onto this architectural element, it is within itself, a living, breathing, natural element.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Dawn Hollingsworth said, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?I do want to clarify that the dark sky was our choice. It was not required. There are some ordinances in other adjacent municipalities, but in this particular case, the Sovereign Nation of Morongo does not have a dark-sky ordinance. The decision was made as a team, to try to mitigate what we knew we had to do to the tower, which was uplight the tower. We made conscious choices as designers, as opposed to having them imposed upon us. I think that?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s important to clarify in terms of the way we think about lighting practice.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
The success of the project hinged in part on a computer animatic (an animated rendering) of the project The Jerde Partnership architects produced for the client at the beginning of the project. Almost as soon as they viewed the animatic, the Visual Terrain team began both analyzing the needs of the project, and developing personal attachments to certain aspects of it. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?For me it was the porte-cochere (the structure over the driveway and main entrance),?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Passamonte Green. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?And it was the shape of the porte-cochere and the challenges in lighting a giant desert bloom, which is the shape of the porte-cochere. It?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s a giant desert bloom with petals that you drive under as you approach the entrance to the casino. The height of the structure is over 30 feet on the curve of each petal, with a center pistil that rises another 30 feet.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
What made the project tough for everyone was the speed with which it was executed: from initial design meeting to opening was only 23 months. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We broke ground before the drawings were finished,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Hollingsworth said. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?So, you knew that things were on a pretty fast track. The drawings got finished after the groundbreaking, and even with that there were still things that had to get coordinated and changed as budget issues came up.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
?EUR??,,????'?????<?We wanted it to be something that was an elegant solution and something that worked during the day as well as at night,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Passamonte-Green.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?Among the challenges, believe it or not, was the roadway lighting that leads the guest to the porte-cochere. Because the porte-cochere has such elegance and a strong presence, it was how do we illuminate a roadway to get people comfortably into the building, without putting up a pole that would visually impede their view of the porte-cochere??EUR??,,????'?????<? added Matt Levesque.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?It also helps bring the lighting down to a pedestrian scale,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Passamonte-Green. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?What the bollards do is help with that overall approach and the overall ?EUR??,,????'?????<?friendliness,?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? and sense of arrival. We did talk initially about the idea that the tower would be restricted to colors found in daylight, sunlight, sunset, sunrise.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
?EUR??,,????'?????<?Relative to the environment, this tower is huge. I mean, it is its own skyline,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Levesque. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?So, a lot of the conceptual ideas came from nature. The color palette was created from gradations of colored light, because that?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s what natural light does. It doesn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t just start here and stop there. All the colors blend in and intermix with each other creating an organic mass of colored light that can be seen several miles away. However, I must note that while programming the LED curtain wall, we started to notice that some of the natural video elements were all starting to visually blend together. Sometimes we were forced into displaying some graphic movements of light to startle the eye and when the natural color schemes would return they would visually be much more powerful. It truly became a serious exercise in perceptions.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
?EUR??,,????'?????<?Early in the discussions we talked about the fact that it is so surrounded by nature, it?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s close to those mountains, it?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s so encompassed by nature that we didn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t want anything we did at night to look unnatural or forced. It needed to look as if it was organic and has been there all along and this whole thing just magically grew out of the desert,?EUR??,,????'?????<? added Passamonte-Green.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?It?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s this concept that the building is breathing light. We?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re just not throwing light onto this architectural element, it is itself, a living, breathing, natural element,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Levesque.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?Another design challenge was that The Jerde Partnership had shown in the animatic a little animation for the lighting,?EUR??,,????'?????<? continued Levesque. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We developed a fixture that was producing animation color mixing and was rated for exterior use. That was exceptional, because we ended up using parts and pieces of things that were already built. And because it was DMX controllable, there was some paranoia about how does that DMX translate to a wheel that needs to continuously loop. Well, fortunately, part of their fixture could handle that, because it already did a continuous spin.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
?EUR??,,????'?????<?That was Dawn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s original specification,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Levesque. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?I personally could not be any more gratified: ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Wow, we helped the environment!?EUR??,,????'?????<? (laughs) My programmer, Mark, would laugh at me: ?EUR??,,????'?????<?It?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s just parking lot lighting.?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? And I said, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?No, you don?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t understand?EUR??,,????'?????<???? that?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s a lot of light, a lot of parking lot area to cover, and there?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s pure blackness above them.?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR??EUR??,,????'?????<?
?EUR??,,????'?????<?It?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s socially responsible,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Hollingsworth.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?Especially because parking lots for casinos are not subtly lit. People are carrying money and you have that safety factor?EUR??,,????'?????<????,?EUR??,,????'?????<? added Passamonte-Green.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?We still achieved that, and there?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s black above,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Levesque. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?The Gardco Gullwing fixtures were a gem. Dawn held hard to that spec, because they were the first thing people wanted to substitute: You know, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?It?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s just a parking lot.?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? But it?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s more than that, and I was so proud to look out at that. I don?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t expect anyone to be excited by parking lot lighting, but I was!?EUR??,,????'?????<?
?EUR??,,????'?????<?It probably helps that one of the principals is married to an amateur astronomer, so it?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s in their focus; it?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s in their desire,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Passamonte-Green. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?There are a number of us who personally enjoy stargazing here. If we go back to the overall original concept, of the organic and natural environment this casino is set in, one of the things we talked about really early on with the oasis, is they have a tube area, like a float area, in the oasis ?EUR??,,????'?????<???(R) the Lazy River ?EUR??,,????'?????<??oeand we were conscious that we didn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t want to be responsible for impeding that view, or doing anything that would detract from that view. People can take a break from the casino and the gambling and the night club, and come out to this oasis, and have it be this paradise where you have the nighttime sky above you and you have stars that you might not necessarily see at home, and you?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?d have this magical experience that went along with the whole story and the environment.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
?EUR??,,????'?????<?That?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s why the up lighting for the tower ?EUR??,,????'?????<???(R) there?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s no other way really, of lighting this size of a tower ?EUR??,,????'?????<???(R) the selected palette was very dense for just that reason,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Levesque. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re cognizant of the dark sky, and can?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t be a hundred percent perfect, but by saturating the colors and making them heavy helped reduce the amount of light into the sky.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
?EUR??,,????'?????<?Matt mentioned earlier, harmony,?EUR??,,????'?????<? added Passamonte-Green. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?That was part of the dark sky discussions we had early on, too, to be harmonious with the surroundings was really important to us. We were very selective. We didn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t just say, willy-nilly, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?There?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s a tree. Let?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s put an uplight on it!?EUR??,,????'?????<? We didn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t put big poles everywhere. The bollards [in the entry drive] are there for a reason. The cut-off in the poles are there for a reason; the cutoff on the fa?????ade?EUR??,,????'?????<???? it was all part of the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?master plan.?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR??EUR??,,????'?????<?
?EUR??,,????'?????<?The pendulum has swung to the extreme in terms of the dark sky ordinances,?EUR??,,????'?????<? concludes Passamonte-Green. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re working on another project right now, where it is mandatory, and they are extreme. But I think with responsible practice, we can get it back to a reasonable sort of ability to meld the environmental concerns over the night sky, and the light pollution. I think it?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s important to try to take an active role in making that happen and being involved, as opposed to just fighting it. We need to find the solutions that we can use as lighting designers?EUR??,,????'?????<????I think it?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s all a part of being respectful of the entire environment, and the environment is not only the built environment, but the surrounding environment.
