In the Feb. LASN, we featured some of the winning hardscapes from the 2017 Hardscape North America (HNA) Awards, which were presented Oct. 19, 2017 on the trade show floor of the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky. The HNA tradeshow is co-located with the Green Industry and Equipment Expo. The awards are the industry's top honors for designing and installing projects using concrete pavers, segmental retaining walls, clay brick, porcelain and combinations of hardscape products. "Winner" and "Honorable Mention" awards were presented for residential and commercial walkways, patios, driveways, commercial plazas, streets and other project applications. There were a record number entries (149) submitted in 16 categories. ![]() Pasqualoni Pool Project, South Windsor, Conn. Contractor: Bahler Brothers (South Windsor, Conn.) There's also a putting green, covered deck with under decking and lighting, large paver patio on several levels and extensive plantings. Designer: Shawano Lawn and Stone The new owners of this lakeside cottage inherited a deteriorating wood deck and opted for concrete pavers. However, local county zoning contravened impermeable surfaces within 100' of the shoreline. Holland permeable pavers in a herringbone pattern with solid gray pavers for a border offered the solution and the clean look the clients sought. The circular patio and curved pathways were challenging to install. Special design consideration was given to the selection and installation of base materials to ensure the properly capture and filtration of storm water. ___________________________ ![]() Strosin Outdoor Retreat, Waukesha, Wis. Contractor/Installer: Extreme Outdoors, Big Bend, Wis. Manufacturer: Unilock Designer: Jamon Peterson Unilock 'Bristol Valley' pavers with a 'Steel Mountain' blend are bordered and inlayed with 'Copthorne' pavers with 'Basalt' accents. There are 6 fire features, 4 water features, a brick pizza oven, full outdoor kitchen, a 20' long half round bar and 140-low-voltage light fixtures controlled by smart phone. ___________________________ ![]() Blue Bell, Pa., Country Club Fire Pit Lounge Contractor/Installer: FS Landscaping Contractors, Inc. A custom curved Trex deck cantilevers over the edge of the pond, constructed flush to the patio and fire pit lounge to complement the curved deck. The fire pit includes a wirelessly controlled gas unit and was custom built using 'Antique' wall stone. A retaining/sitting wall, pillars and boulders complete the retention of hillside. ___________________________ ![]() Contractor/Installer: Delta Development, Raleigh Manufacturer: Fay Block Designer: Delta Development, Terratech Engineers Weston Corners is a luxury mixed-use development in Cary, N.C. The site required several significant retaining walls with one close to the property line, street and a building. The retaining walls were originally designed as cast-in-place with brick pilasters, but the bids came in way over budget. Working with Terratech Engineers and Fay Block, Delta Development presented a 25' to 30' tall Allan Block Ashlar Blend patterned retaining walls with a deeper faced unit to create the appearance of pilasters or columns. ![]() Widget is loading comments...
