MONTPELIER, VT-The capital of Vermont just opened up its newest pocket park and gives its people the chance to enjoy some open space. The 1,700-square foot park is located on the corner of Court and Elm Streets, sitting on the front of a house used for Trust for Public Land headquarters. TPL is a national nonprofit organization conserving land for people to enjoy as parks, gardens and natural areas, ensuring livable communities for generations to come. ?EUR??,,????'??What makes this project unique is having a pedestrian level plaza, with a steep grade rising about 12 feet in only 30 or 40 feet,?EUR??,,????'?? told TPL project manager Aaron Brondyke to LASN. ?EUR??,,????'??Since the park is terraced, there?EUR??,,????'???s a triangular plaza at street level. People can sit in their wheel chairs and be surrounded by butterflies and hummingbirds.?EUR??,,????'?? Large flowers attract the birds and butterflies. Various sedums, beebola and verbena bonariensis are some of the native plant materials in the park. The indigenous materials from the center of the state are drought tolerant and also attract birds and chipmunks, said Brondyke. ?EUR??,,????'??The garden has an element of conservation with interpretive signs describing features such as native fruits or berries,?EUR??,,????'?? said Brondyke. Other elements of the park include turf between the flower beds, flat terraces and dry stone walls for sitting. Park benches and trash receptacles help complete the pocket park. The Vermont Youth Conservation Corps, a statewide nonprofit youth, service, conservation and education organization, spent three weeks in July at the site, assessing with construction work. The park includes a wheelchair accessible seating area, butterfly garden and native plantings. Landscape Architect Jean Vissering designed the park, with assistance from the Vermont Institute of Natural Science. Terry Solomon of Alpine Landscape Co. oversaw park construction. ?EUR??,,????'??Getting all these agencies to work together wasn?EUR??,,????'???t incredibly challenging,?EUR??,,????'?? said Brondyke. ?EUR??,,????'??It?EUR??,,????'???s a great opportunity for young people in Montpelier to enjoy a new park at no extra cost. The Department of Transportation also gets a new park along a heavily traveled street. It?EUR??,,????'???s a win-win situation for all parties involved.?EUR??,,????'??
