LASN recently received a note from Mrs. Shirley Binder, wife of Morton Binder, ASLA, for 48 years.

She wrote: ?EUR??,,????'??Morton Binder passed away on Aug. 8, 2005 at the age of 92 years and nine months. He enjoyed Landscape Architect (and Specifier News) so very much.?EUR??,,????'??

Morton Binder was born in San Luis Obispo County, Calif. He was a landscape architect, residential home designer, an interior decorator and a prolific writer, contributing to Sunset Western Garden Book, Pacific Coast Nurseryman, Organic Gardening, Popular South Lincoln News and the News-Times in Newport (Ore.). His syndicated garden columns appeared in California and Oregon. He taught at Los Angeles Pierce Community College and Pasadena City College.

Binder became a member of the now defunct American Institute of Landscape Architects in 1956 and developed comprehensive charts of plant materials published in 1958, revised for Oregon conditions and republished in 1984 and 1990. He was an emeritus member of the Oregon ASLA chapter and a member of the Seal Rock Garden Club. Binder practiced landscape architecture for 21 years in San Luis Obispo. His practice covered southern and central Calif., and the S.F. Bay area.

Morton and Shirley traveled to more than 100 countries and indulged their interest in photography.

The couple survived a plane crash in the Amazon jungle.

Shirley lives in Waldport, Ore. Binder is also survived by daughter and son-in-law, Frances and John Lancaster; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Pam Binder; four grandchildren, Katrina Berquist, Brent Lancaster, Monty and Brett Binder; and three great-grandchildren, Zachary, Melody and Kyle Berquist.
